Something unusual started happening a few years ago at the Essense Studio (our studio shop here in Boulder, Colorado) which surprised us. Locals started visiting the shop and announcing that they didn’t usually wear perfume… they only wear *Lemongrass essential oil* as their personal fragrance. This made us all do a double take. What? We found this very curious…. Not the least of which was that lemongrass essential oil should be diluted before applying directly to the skin as it could be very irritating (I say this as an aromatherapist), but also because it is quite volatile (not long lasting at all) and is, well, rather 2 dimensional as a fragrance. Nature has provide little structure to tell the story of how beautiful this material and plant can be. I took these pronouncements as a challenge: what could I do with Lemongrass that not only kept the essential nature (no pun intended) of the essential oil that these clients loved but made it a 3 dimensional, full fledged perfume that would excite and delight ? This is that fragrance: LOVE, Lemongrass. It is still an all natural perfume created to fill that need; in my clients who crave the aromatherapeutic benefits of lemongrass, as well as its evocative scent but also my need to provide a natural perfume of volume, design, and beauty. To do so, I invited my friends, the bees, to come dance with lemongrass.
This is the story that I imagined to myself as I created LOVE, Lemongrass:
“Buzzing about, covered in glorious golden pollen, are the bees of Summer. They send their love letter through the blossoming gardens filled with lemon balm, chamomile, and green grasses. This fragrance combined with spicy wildflowers and honey wafting from the dusky corners of the forest sing a uniquely sweet and lemony yet fabulously animalic chorus. It’s curious and beguiling”.
LOVE, Lemongrass is a communing and collaboration between the flowers and the bees. A love letter to the human world from the natural world that says “Come to me! Indulge in my world! Let’s play!”

I didn’t expect to like LOVE, Lemongrass as much as I do. Lemongrass can go sharp or overly herbal, but this one feels surprisingly balanced. The opening is bright and fresh, almost sparkling, without crossing into that harsh citrus cleaner territory. There is a softness underneath that keeps it grounded and wearable.
As it settles, it becomes warmer and slightly creamy, while still holding onto that fresh green edge. Something you can wear during the day without thinking twice, but it still has enough character to stand out if someone gets close.
It is not a loud fragrance and if you like fresh scents but want something more nuanced than basic citrus, this is worth trying!
