The second in our series, Tsukiyo-en (pronounced “Ski-o N”), is the scent of a walk through a Japanese garden illuminated by moonlight.
As the humid summer gives rise to fragrant plants of every kind, the garden is filled with perfume. From the tender greenery of new bamboo, to refreshing herbs, and fruiting trees, by moonlight the scents diffuse and soften into the night air creating a waft of heavenly delight. The walk is refreshing as well as meditative; you go and return, renewed.

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has done it again. I’m a huge fan of almost all her work, and make a point of trying every new scent she creates (a number of which have swept me off my feet, and a few of which not only inspire my days and inflect my own work, but haunt my dreams and transport me into seasons and country rooms, both indoors and outdoors). In her talented endeavors, she has a knack of combining just the right notes to evoke and/or infuse a memory, a space, a spirit of place. With this particular fragrance, she’s knocked it out of the park. Tsukiyo-en is summer; it’s a gentle, uncluttered garden; it’s a delicate, clean waft of the Japan I’ve personally experienced–especially Kyoto and its bamboo temple groves and tea houses at twilight. I can’t recommend it strongly enough.

To me, this is such a rejuvenating fragrance. From the citrussy beginning, through refreshing shiso and bamboo greenery, it leads me into the moonlight garden awash with gentle, nighttime floracy. Aah…
I don’t usually “wax poetic” like this – must be the transformative power of Dawn’s lovely perfume!

Tsukiyo-en came as a bonus free sample with my ordered samples of Le jardin Vert and Divine Gardens. I don’t think I would have ordered it myself and that would have been a tragedy.
Tsukiyo-en EDT is subtle and exquisite, quite beautiful, and sits close to the skin. Its opening is wet/dewy green flowers, just unfurling or blossoming. We’re not talking bold freesia or tuberose or Jasmine. We’re talking tulips and a bit lilting, not quite citrus. Maybe an herb (I’m not good with the notes). It’s almost greenhouse. I just know I need more time with it then a 1ml sample can provide, so I just ordered 10ml of the EDT and 1 ml sample of the parfum.
Ms. Hurwitz excels at coloring a scene into her perfumes with subtle shading. This, Eau de Trianon, and Le Jardin Vert are like Plein Air paintings.

I received this as a sample with a previous order, and I’m very impressed with this fragrance. Overall I’d class it as a light, citrus white floral with notes of green sap.
It opens with a bright, citrus note – sweet, I almost thought it was reminiscent of bergamot – but must be the mikan. It dries down to a beautiful, light, breezy white floral ending on a note of green sap at the end of an inhale, as if you just broke a green bamboo leaf under your nose. However, there is no sharpness to it, it is softened by the restrained sweetness of the white floral. As the fragrance continues to dry down, the white tea note emerges, softly from the white flowers. It’s a very soft and gentle scent, with a definite presence that lingers, but not at all obtrusively. There are many layers to this fragrance, I am still exploring it.

If you’ve watched Spirited Away before, this perfume definitely reminds me of that film. It has the herbal components of Yubaba’s bathhouse, combined with an earthy, leafy garden — and somehow, the vibes of soft, cooling moonlight. I love how delicate this perfume is and will be coming back soon for a larger size.

Oh this is really nice! Airy white tea creates a gentle, yet refreshing opening. Bright, green leaves and sweet citrus fruits add to the fresh feeling, as a base of smooth, warm woods bring a sense of balance to the fresh blend.. The emerging fragrance of humid, golden herbs is tempered by soft, sheer florals, combining with the bright botanicals and smooth white tea for a realistic spa atmosphere that is natural and calming.
I’m not usually fan of clean or herbal scents, but this one is very well-balanced and wearable without being too fresh or focusing too much on the herbs. Personally, I would prefer more white tea and florals, but the current balance is much more accurate to the scent’s inspiration, extremely evocative of traditional Japanese soaking tubs that are filled with healing herbs and small, whole yuzu or mikan.
An incredibly well-crafted spa scent, cool and refreshing with touches of comforting warmth from the wooden tub and humid herbs. If you’re looking for a fresh summer scent, this is a great choice — unique but wearable and quite relaxing.

Amazingly delicete beauty, very Japanese aesthetic, crisp, fresh, classically elegant. I go to Japan twice a year. Japanese people rarely wear perfume, but I believe if they smell it, they will be greatly surprised It concentrates the essence of classical art in a bottle. Mine is finished and I need another bottle.
