Description
I’m thrilled to introduce you to the third in my series of Nocturnes : Vers la Voute Étoilée (Towards the Starry Vault). The instant that I learned of this phrase through a wonderful piece of music, I was enthralled. Yes! This needs to be a perfume! (What better way of contemplating the glorious night sky than this?)
For this perfume I was not only inspired by the musical work (written as a symphonic poem) but also the period in which it was produced: the 1930’s. Vers la Voute Étoilée, the fragrance, has a wonderful retro feel as it is technically an aldehydic chypre, but there are such rich florals and spice elements that it also could be defined as a ‘floral – ambery’ style. This is a design that I have been working on for over 4 years; developing the lush night scented stock accord that dominates the heart, made all the more exotic by star jasmine, stargazer lily, and a black petunia accord.
I hope that with Vers la Voute Étoilée you will feel yourself hushed among the night blooming flowers of summer as you breath in the awe inspiring stars of the heavens above.

The skill, imagination, and innovation of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz once again leaves me almost breathless–fortunately, not so much that I cannot inhale this heavenly combination of scents. It’s far beyond my own skill levels as a ‘nose’ to critique the layers and notes interwoven in her brilliant creation here, but the evening garden to which it transports me is a place I wish to inhabit all day and night.

This is the evening stock fragrance I have been waiting for. The first hit is all floral, then it matures into a layered and rich honeyed scent, but not sweet. There is a hint of animal and spice grounding it all. Wow! Just love it. Dawn ticked all the boxes for me with this one.

What a beautiful floral chypre! I have never smelled night-scented stock in a perfume before. I have long admired the scent in florist shops, and in a few botanical and friend’s gardens over the years. It has a spiciness similar to carnation and lily that I love. The combination of all the other flowers in this perfume makes me feel like I am surrounded by bouquets of stock, carnations, lilies, jasmine and even some daffodils. I love the warm, comforting drydown. The combination of sandalwood, moss, and patchouli does not stand out, it just provides a fragrant vase to hold these gorgeous flowers.

This perfume is so beautiful that it brings tears to my eyes. It reminds me of when I was a young woman waiting for a rendezvous with the ( then) love of my life. There is something so tender but passionate about these night-blooming flowers that it feels like a waking dream. A dream in which the next moment anything can happen. The perfume is too well blended for me to pick out individual notes but it seems like a sweet spicy floral drenched in moonlight, dew and
honey. I’ve tried many of Dawns fragrances and I like and even love most of them. But I think that this is my new favorite. It’s romantic and exciting at the same time. Though they are very differentl perfumes, the feeling Vers la Voute a Etoilee evokes is similar to vintage Narcisse Noir. There is something captivating and very seductive about each of them. And though I am a long time fan of Caron’s vintage perfumes , I think that in this case, Dawn has surpassed them. If you like dark, mysterious, seductive, lush fragrances, then please try this: it is absolute magic!

This scent is unique in that is has a very prominent note of Black Petunia. For me, this didn’t really change from top-middle-base but stayed uniform throughout. A slightly powdery clove and subtle spice enhances the petunia instead of masking her. There is something comforting and relaxing about this fragrance, it truly is night time appropriate.

Wow, the florals in this are spectacular – all the night-blooming beauties really bring their drama, and I especially love that they’re less commonly-used florals; I don’t know what stock or black petunia smells like, but the stargazer lily comes through beautifully in the bouquet. The whole feel is like you’ve snuck out to the garden in the depths of night for a tryst but you get distracted by all the beautiful flowers, and then your lover arrives and also gets distracted by the flowers. Decadently floral.
