Euphorisme d’Opium: Opium Perfume: c.1977
The original “YSL Opium” perfume, when launched was a scandal. Not only for the open drug reference but for it’s open sexuality and sensuality. Just as YSL was inspired by his beloved Morocco and concepts of “the Orient”, I have infused this original design of Opium perfume (which as of 2010, is no longer on the market) with some extra doses of the euphoric aromas that bring this enchanting Spicy-Ambery perfume to life.

Opium (along with Obsession for Men) was one of the few commercial perfumes I liked enough to use. It fitted my strong penchant for spicy, smoky, aldehydic fragrances that were not cloying. It’s marvelous to see the scent recreated by Dawn in all its dark-hued opulence.

If you love the original Opium, from back before reformulation, this is a wonderful substitute. The spicy, edgy opulence is all there. It doesn’t last too long on me, but is worth reapplication. I’m coveting the pure perfume.

Well this is such a fantastic perfume, that it deserves two reviews!
When I wear this scent, I always get positive comments about it, and questions about where to buy it!! I must get some of DSH’s business cards! It gives me such a feeling of womanly seductiveness and beauty, and I love that! I also feel so very grounded when I wear it. I will have to start carrying a hankie with some on it so that I can enjoy it more! Thank you, Thank you for making this Euphorisme d’ Opium!

I’d give this ten stars if I could. It’s almost exactly like the original Opium before all the magical ingredients became either de-listed or just left out of current versions. It is mouthwateringly sexy — I can’t get enough. Wish it came in a large bottle.

I received my sample today. It is heavenly. Since I have been unable to get the original Opium, I have not worn a scent. What I received was very close to what I remember and was like meeting an old beloved friend.

YSL Opium is one of the major perfumes of my life and I will love it for all of my days without regard for it being long out of style. I have a great stash of vintage in both edt and parfum, as well as bottle of Fou extrait, in my cabinet. Soon I will add Euphorisme too. Dawn has done an excellent job making her own living version of the vintage classic. Sexy, oriental heaven in a bottle. Marvelous.

I am somewhat envious of other people who are able to write things like, “I get an initial blast of bergamot, then it settles down into lovely coumarin kissed with oakmoss.” I am not advanced enough to be able to pick out anything but the most obvious notes such as rose, lavender and vanilla. Sigh. It is maybe a little bit easier for me to comment on this iteration of Opium since it was/is such an iconic fragrance. In truth, I climbed onto the Opium wagon back in the day, and in truth, I never liked it. It “wore me” in the worst way. I also rather disliked the marketing/name (still do) as it obviously tries to trade on the transgressive nature of opium, as though wearing a fragrance somehow gives one street cred of a sort. But this is all rather philosophical/political. I got a free sample of this thoughtfully tucked into my latest order and have been sampling it and it is quite nice, indeed evoking Opium but in my opinion, improving upon it. In the original Opium, there is a sort of neediness in its loudness: Pay attention to me! Forgive me for making this comparison, but it’s like someone being on reality TV craving attention which belies a certain amount of insecurity, versus someone who radiates quiet confidence, embodies innate charisma, and who commands attention not because they desire it, but as a natural consequence of that confidence and charisma. This DSH fragrance is smoky, spicy, sweet, but not overwrought, histrionic, it doesn’t slap you in the face demanding attention. I am not sure if any of this makes sense at all since fragrance is so very subjective. I will add that this reminds me very much of the DSH Poivre, which I think is very beautiful. Poivre seems a bit more spicy to me, but to my nose they are very similar. Poivre seems a bit more “rough” (in a good way!) and sassy. This Opium is like Poivre having gone to finishing school and become a grand Dame or beloved Shakespearean actor (Hellen Mirren!) whereas Poivre retains a bit of elemental chaos befitting a lead singer in a rock band who is no less powerful and charismatic than the Grand Dame (Joan Jett!).

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to add a second review but I thought it worth the time and effort to elaborate a bit more on this fragrance. I’m a veterinary technician. About a week ago, an assistant and I were wrestling with a 90-lb collie trying to get x-rays of its hips/femurs. It did NOT want this to happen. Oh, the struggle! Dog slobber, sweat dripping off my nose, total cardio and strength workout. Afterwards, I could smell this magnificent perfume in a little cloud around my beat-up body and it made me so very very happy: it is a gorgeous, spicy, confident, elegant scent. Then another tech came by and said, “You smell good. I mean: you smell REALLY good.” And there you are.

I have unfortunately never smelt the original Opium, but I LOVE this perfume. It’s the first of my samples that I bought a full size of.
It’s a classic incredibly well done ambery floral with an initial blast of spices [pepper & cloves] lightened by the freshness of bergamot with a well blended rose & carnation heart [I detect more rose than carnation] with a smooth sandalwood/amber base. It’s decadent & rich
