About This Product

When beginning “Les Fruits Defendus”, I was somewhat surprised to find dates among the ‘forbidden fruits’ that come to us from antiquity.  But upon contemplation, it makes sense really, how such a rich, sugary sweet delicacy would suggest the taboo.

The challenge that presented itself when considering how to present a date-centric botanical perfume was what to pair it with to keep it from getting too sweet to bear and to make it more interesting than just a sweet fruit scent.  Incense seemed natural, and then I found Bakul attar (from India) which added the right amount of exoticism and richness to make the whole design work.  What became Bakul Medjool is sweet, smoky, rich and sensual with just a bit of the scandalous.

Dawn’s fragrances are always complex and this one is that. All of the sweetness and incense combine for a wonderful scent. I find the “for men” designation in the descriptions makes me think it’s not for me. But this can be worn by either sex for cooler weather.

I love the fact that so many new perfumeurs are using dates as part of that “sweet spot” you experience with gourmand perfumes. This one is no exception. Make sure that you don’t judge it before the last couple of hours that you leave it on your skin. That’s the best part!

I received this as a free sample with another order and I’m so glad that I did! I tend to avoid fruity fragrances because so many of them in recent years have been marketed to teenagers, and many of them smell very similar ( and very sweet ) to me. Bakul Medjool could not be more different! Recently, I have been trying some of Andy Tauer’s creations which really remind me of the desert. This fragrance complements his Coeur du Le Desert very nicely. It smells like a beautiful oasis complete with date trees appearing in the middle of an arid wasteland. There is a richness to Medjool which never changes into sugary overkill. While unusual and a bit exotic, there is something warmly comforting about it. I will definitely be buying a full bottle in the near future.
