(haiku no.4;  Japan :: Moonlight series, 2018)

The final ‘season’ in the Haiku / Japan :: Moonlight series… the “Frosty Moon” is an essential experience in the Japanese aesthetic.
Snow (and white), symbolic of death, is both chilled and blanketing.  In the dead of winter the seeds of Spring and new life are found.  Shimotsuki is a fragrance which speaks to these contrasts: both cool and warming, crystalline, and fluffy.  Through it all, it is a perfume suffused with silvery-bluish-white moonlight glimmering on new fallen snow.

    This is one of the greatest and creative scents ever! Probably because it is inspired by the foreign culture that is so mysterious. It is like fluffy, warm and delicious snow. Refreshing and floral butmore abstract. Blended really masterfully so it is hard to point out certain notes. Strangely powdery and I adore it. Wintery and illusive gem

    I lived in Japan for 10 years; for 2 years in a rural, mountainous area, and for 8 years in a semi-rural, rice-paddy-filled town. I was fascinated by the Japan series of fragrances and opted to sample this one. I found this an amazing representation of a “frosty moon.” It truly does smell like a winter evening up in the mountains. A sort of mineral-like quality gives a chilly, snowy effect, and then some gentle conifer scent mingling in. I give the scent 5 stars for effort and creativity, but dock one star because it is not something I found I could comfortably wear as a perfume. I know that fragrance is incredibly subjective and what one person finds questionable, another person adores. For me, Shimotsuki would work more as a subtle home fragrance. It would take me back to my time in Japan, sitting in front of the space heater in winter, eating roasted sweet potatoes after a hot bath.

    Opens with the dry, cool powder of orris. As someone who is not at all a fan of powdery perfumes, i was getting a bit worried, but as it dries, soft, pink blossoms emerge, their silky petals smoothing the orris. I’m not familiar with hawthorn flowers, but the floral nectar really reminds me of the rich juices of peaches and plums, evoking images of snow-covered plum blossoms as hints of warm, hawthorn wood emerge. A delicate, sweet floral with a sophisticated feel.

    Shimotsuki is a beautiful fragrance. I love the inspiration behind this composition. It is cool and warm simultaneously; both comforting and melancholic. I love the orris in Shimotsuki and it stands out on my skin, providing a cool, earthy, and powdery facet. Shimotsuki is beautiful during the winter and does evoke snow, but I think it wears beautifully year-round.

    Iris is the star here, with its icy, rooty facets and buttery warmths dialed up in careful equilibrium. A grapey hawthorn and dry woody base add interest to the dance.

    Quiet & contemplative- initially smells cool & powdery but amazingly becomes warm from the rice & lipsticky from the orris with a subtle woody base- very unique

    A little too subtle for me, but great for those wanting an unobtrusive fragrance— I’ve actually purchased samples as presents for two different friends. The iris is really nice and not too powdery for my tastes; this also leans more delicate and cozy than I was expecting, though the sense of cold does come through. My partner gave her sample of it to me because she thought it had an overpowering alcohol smell. The next day she asked me what scent I was wearing and it was shimotsuki, lol. She immediately asked to have the sample back— so don’t be scared if it comes off a little strong upon first application!
