This perfume came in a dream. Sometimes that’s how it happens…
A beautiful iris, like an apparition, appears… its velvet petals unfurl to reveal its gilded edges. The sparkling, golden iris floats, fluttering both silk and velvet, emitting its beautifully creamy, powdery, floral and yes, enigmatic, perfume.
This was my dream. I awoke with this lovely fragrance still in my nose and in my consciousness. The next day I began painting the golden iris and sketching the fragrance. L’Or(ris) is the dreamy, golden orris perfume.

I’ve sampled L’Orris a few times now, and while subjectively/emotionally, it does not resonate with me, more objectively and critically, I find it a fascinating fragrance. DSH is a cerebral artist, very erudite; but also wildly creative. It’s fun to read about the inspirations for her creations. I was pleased to find the L’orris sample tucked in with my purchase. I’m a beginner-level perfume lover, and have been sampling for a few years now some of the “iconic” fragrances. I did try S. Lutens’ Iris Silver Mist. And the several times wore my sample, I thought: Is this all there is? Yes, there is a moist, rootiness about it, a soft sweetness. But I was bored bored bored. Maybe I am anosmic to the things people were rapturous about in this fragrance. This DSH orris did start out with that vegetal carrot/parsnip-type rootiness. And then it opened out into a spicy/smoky/woody fragrance that I would absolutely consider unisex. It reminded me of the time my mother learned how to do wood-burning and had a little wood-burning tool with different nibs, and some wood pieces. She let us use the tool, too–a few burned fingers here and there–but I remember it as being fun, sort of magical, and that lovely aroma of burning wood. I will give my little sample away–just have to figure out whom this will suit!–because it doesn’t suit me personally. Someone else might award only a star or two to a fragrance that someone didn’t like or couldn’t wear. But fragrance is very subjective. I find this scent to be above all else interesting and unusual, thus the 5 stars. I think the watercolor picture used to advertise this fragrance–diffuse shades of gray and gold and yellow–are an exactly appropriate chromatic representation of this scent: warm, vegetal, a bit murky, with swirling woods and smoke.

Rooty, rich orris. Starts out a little chilly and gets a bit warmer in the base with some woods. In the heart, a wonderful fruity, rosy note pops out over the iris.

I can’t tell you what i smell except orris, but that it is phenomenal! I soaked some in a paper towel and my bedroom smelled heavenly for days. It has that rooty fleshy iris thing, but I love that. Everything else is alchemy made perfect. This was a sample from an order I placed, and will be my holiday gift this year. Now im in the rabbit hole. I really dont need more perfumes. Or do I?
