Pineapple King

You know how I like to have fun with fragrance….right?  🙂

Well, let me introduce you to Pineapple King… one of the most fun (IMHO) fragrances I have made in awhile.  This design has a couple of popular culture references that might seem remote as they occur in different times on the American movie timeline.  The first, and most dominant source is the the 1950’s Elvis Presley movie: Blue Hawaii.  Everyone who works at my studio knows that my father was a huge Elvis fan from the 1950’s right through my childhood, and easily my favorite of all of Elvis’ movies is Blue Hawaii.  It’s filmed in Technicolor (or Vistavision, or one of those over the top colorful films of the era) and everything pops!  I wanted to infuse Pineapple King with this same sense of color.

Pineapple King also has references, scent design / ‘dna’ wise, to a fragrance my father wore, (and maybe the King himself, in the 1950’s) when my Dad met my Mom: Aqua Velva.  But since I didn’t want this scent to be a complete retro-nouveau throw back, I modernized the feel and of course, added a big dose of pineapple.

The other, maybe obscure, maybe not, pop culture reference for this fragrance has to do with the name, Pineapple King.  One of my favorite movies of the 1980’s is “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off” has a scene where the teens are trying to scam their way into a very exclusive restaurant that requires a reservation, and they sneak a peek at the reservation book to spy the name of “Abe Froman; the Sausage King of Chicago”.  I LOVE this scene so much that the idea of making a perfume with ‘anything’ King, makes me giggle and think of this scene.
