Description
Aurum is latin for gold. That was, in a way, the starting point for this fragrance: a golden light frankincense (as frakincense was worth its weight in gold in the ancient world). It was prized for its spiritual energy as well as its use in embalming.
For me, many of the frankincense materials I use vary between ‘greenish gold’ to ‘reddish gold’ in terms of synesthetic impressions… but always gold and shining in its feel. Until I started creating Aurum incense. As I worked on the perfume some new impressions began to emerge: a dark, inky smoke undertone that changed the colors from pure gold hues to golden light among ‘indigo’ smoke.
Perhaps it’s the addition of the myrrh gum and labdanum; perhaps the oppopanax and spices that had made the difference. Either way, Aurum Incense feels like this to me: Indigo blue and gold light-filled wisps of frankincense smoke lifting our hopes and prayers to the celestial realm. A connection with the ancients. A beautiful way to be in the darkness but feel the presence of the light.
** Aurum Incense is not only all botanical, but contains multiple genus’ from the rare Boswellia Sacra (Oman) to Boswellia Carterii (Yemen) to Boswellia Serrata (India) (as well as others), but also numerous extractions of frankincense from essential oils, to absolutes, and co2 extractions. Together they make the most beautiful frankincense I’ve ever smelled.

I love this. I went out on a limb and ordered without sampling – no regrets! It’s incense, but soft, quiet, restful.

Beautiful, pure frankincense scent with little else to distract from it. The frankincense is bright, complex, and never harsh. I can’t discern most of the background elements like the florals or spices, but I do pick up on the beautiful melange of soft, smooth woods. It feels like smoldering loose tears of resins and wood chips on a hot plate.

This gorgeous composition was a blind buy based on the description and it exceeded my expectations. Frankincense is central, but there are boozy, woody, and floral notes swirling around the resins. Simply enchanting. I super need this beauty in my life right now.

A frankincense proudly bearing its sour, piney light proudly! I’m reminded more of sun dappled woods than church here. I love it!

My immediate thoughts were “cinnamon copper”! Dawn writes in her description that frankincense can sometimes be a bit medicinal smelling, and as such I have tended to stay away from that note. I was a bit nervous about this fragrance, but was surprised to find how gentle and friendly it is. By turns spicy, fruity, and woody, it lacks the typical smoke of stereotypical incense fragrances, and wears quite subtlely on the skin.
