Description
Modern Venice still wears its past like a second skin. Everywhere I go, the air carries it: clouds of worn leather and patchouli, softened by time, stitched together with cigarette smoke that lingers long after the hand that held it has disappeared. It rises from café doors, from narrow calli where the light barely reaches, from passing coats brushed by history. The scent follows me, or maybe I follow it, step after step across stones that have learned the shape of longing.
Mixed with the memory of golden tungsten light and bitter whiskey, it becomes something unmistakable. Each breath feels aged, deliberate, like a spirit poured and left to open. The smoke curls through it all, softening the edges, making even the present feel already remembered.
With every step through the city, Venice exhales. Patchouli, tobacco, smoke curls, and liquor blur into a single sensation, and the city moves through me as much as I move through it. This is how it keeps you; by wafting smoke, by perfume, by echo, by the quiet illusion that you’ve been here before, and will carry it with you long after you leave.
