While the COVID-19 pandemic rages on and we still find ourselves in isolation (and sometimes lock down) I have found the need to continue this series of isolation / meditation drawings and fragrant designs. Still working with subject matter found in my home or around my yard, and inspired by substances also found here.
Living in Colorado affords many experiences with conifers, even in one’s own yard. For me there’s Blue Spruce, White Pine, and Ponderosa. These trees afford many comforts, but none more than the gorgeous sappy resin they produce and the lovely scent of their bark and wood. Thus, the inspiration for Sweet Pine Tar; the beauty of which any ‘tree hugger’ can attest.
At a time when I “don’t get out much”, each inhalation of Sweet Pine Tar instantly transports me to the middle of the cool and comforting forests of my childhood, where conifers and deciduous trees grow side by side and waft their magic together with the scent of dirt, decaying leaves, and hints of smoke from the campfires of many summers.
Fragrant medicine; that’s what this design is for me, pure and simple. A balm and a tonic for the soul. I hope it touches the very depths of you as well.

DSH Perfumes Sweet Pine Tar fragrance I was instantly drawn to when I first saw it posted about, as it sounds right up my alley, a mix of pine tar, cedar, and charcoal, with the sweet resinous hints of amber from the pine tar. It’s actually a little less sweet than I expected, the sharp bite of the resin being perhaps the most noteworthy feature of the blend. It’s characteristically piney and woody, as well, and feels very evocative of the outdoors (albeit not quite as much as Colorado). Overall, it’s a very solid blend that starts out acerbic but dries down to a comfortable, authentic, robust mix.
As is generally the case, I’m very happy with the performance, even if it is not quite as long-lasting as Become the Shaman, which I tried yesterday. Pricing is $235 for 60ml VDP, $125 for 30ml EDP, on the higher side, no doubt due to the some of the raw ingredients that given Sweet Pine Tar its character. To clarify, I sampled the EDP.

I absolutely adore this. It’s got the perfect combination of natural sweetness and spiciness. It provides a beautiful meditative experience, while simultaneously functioning as a perfume. Truly this is something everyone should experience!

The frankincense, birch tar and atlas cedar really give it a sort of smokey, peppery incense feel but also smells sort of human and alive at the same time. The bourbon vanilla gives it just enough sweetness to keep it from bordering on arid. And the charcoal accord is pretty amazing too. Very artful. And it’s all botanical?!? Bravo!

This fragrance brings out all the naturally occurring notes of birch tar and pine tar in a beautiful way. I get notes of freshly cut wood, black licorice, woodsmoke, and bike tires, like with any other birch and pine tar focused fragrance. If you like Comme des Garcons Black, or Comme des Garcons Garage, you will like this. This isn’t cloyingly cupcake-sweet – it’s the sweetness of freshly cut wood – so don’t be put off by the “sweet” in the name if you are sensitive to the sickly-sweet like I am. To my nose, DSH’s Pine Tar brings out less of the licorice/anisic and woody qualities of birch and pine tar than Comme des Garcon’s Black. If you are sensitive to licorice, I think you will prefer DSH’s Sweet Pine Tar.

I dabbed some of this on my wrists before setting off on a short hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. It smelled almost exactly like the hardened drop of pine resin that I later sniffed on the trail. So beautiful – sweet and piney!

I truly enjoy a Sweet Pine Tar. It’s pine’y, smoky, and syrupy, and it feels like it carries the remnants of souls of old chypres in its core. It’s sharp and soft at the same time. It’s cool like an air full of pine and resins and warm like a forest’s floor. It’s very comforting and meditative.

Once again… Dawn took a chance on what she thought I would like… and nailed it. It’s very piney without being sticky like pine sap. A little dab will do it… but definitely a fine fragrance like everything Dawn does

Opens with the natural aroma of pine resin, brightened with sweet frankincense and vibrant pine boughs. Fragrant cedarwood and rich, golden amber emerge, softening the fresh pine notes and giving the blend a comforting warmth.
Charred woods enhance the cozy atmosphere, though the creamy musk of labdanum gives this scent a smooth, sultry finish. Only the most gentle whispers of smoke peek through the amber resins, making it very approachable even if you normally avoid smoke notes.
An impressively natural and realistic pine amber with an alluring vibe.
