I let my imagination go to a time and place when animalic perfumes reigned supreme. Of course, I included the four traditional animal notes: musk, civet, ambergris, and castoreum with added elements of aged oakmoss, and botanical “animalics”; ambrette co2, labdanum, and hyracium tincture (aka African Stone). The heart is filled with indolic juhi jasmine, orange flower absolute, and gardenia balanced by a slightly sharp and spicy white pepper and aldehyde top note. The result is a lush, provocative, and thoroughly sexy perfume for both men and women.

I’m surprised to see I haven’t reviewed Rendezvous as it’s one of my DSH favorites. I guess I assumed someone better with words would do it but for now I can’t leave it unstarred. The Rendezvous description page is very clear as to the things that make up this breathtakingly sexy modern-retro animalic. When I wear it I never think to pick it apart; as usual Dawn has put everything together in a way that makes the perfume alive and continually radiating various waves and whiffs of stuff that makes me swoon. I have the extrait. A little bit goes a long way, with moderate to close sillage as would be expected. On my very dry perfume eating skin it lasts about 8 hours.
It seems like my DSH reviews are all pretty tongue-tied raves and this is no different. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz makes things that feel bespoke. Rendezvous has the quality of the greatest vintages (if not better) with a timeless style. If you, like me, are crazy about great animalics I highly recommend it.

The scent is such a personal thing. There are some fragrances receiving a parade of rave reviews that I can’t simply stand (Baccarat Rouge for example). Just because someone thinks some scent is sexy, it doesn’t mean you’ll find it sexy too.
My favourite scent from Dawn is Vanille Botanique. It is one of my favourite perfumes ever!! I don’t know why, but it just enhances my personality and it makes me happy. On the other hand, Au lait, which is highly popular, is indifferent to me.
All of this to say that I’m not into animalics. I’m aware a lot of people go crazy about them, but this is not my cup of tea.
I recognize the complexity, it reminds me of Oud Infini from Dusita Parfums, but it is a pass for me.

I love animalics, but RendezVous is a lot more complex than that. We typically associate animalics with musks, civet, hyrax, etc. while this perfume is mostle ambery to me. What I smell the most is the peru balsam, the vanilla, oud and labdanum. To provide some perspective, in my opinion, tt’s closer to Sahara Noir from Tom Ford than Salome (Papillon) or other animalics from DSH (Foxy, Le Smoking.
It might be that I tend to sycle through the top notes qiuckly and get to dry down faster than others, but anyways, I strongly advise to sample this beauty and develop an opinion yourself (did i forget to mention that I adored it? Ahah!)

Like with any art, personal preference is such a subjective thing. It seems even more so in the world of scent, that I often feel reluctant to leave reviews. I realize that that is hypocritical though, because I DO like to read reviews (they sometimes help me decide what I might like to sample). Rendezvous is definitely an animalic perfume, but unlike such fragrances done by other brands, no single animalic ‘note’ can be perceived on its own here, so there is nothing that comes off as too strong or actually animal like. The animal notes collectively provide a very encompassing deep warmth to the overall scent. It’s rich, lush and so wonderfully blended. I DO pick up a faint whiff of jasmine, and I’m not a big fan of jasmine alone…but it is so well blended in that it just adds to the overall composition. And Rendezvous is such a befitting name for this, what with all the notes coming so beautifully together! 😉 🙂

One street parallel from my apartment is some of the wildest nightlife in the world. I don’t often partake, but when I do, I wear Rendezvous. If you like animalics and if feel like you want something to happen, trust me, wear this.

I rarely feel perfumes sold as “sexy” are… but “Rendezvous” really is sexy. I think what makes the big difference here are the top notes, and in particular the aldehydes. For the rest to feel dirty, something has to feel clean, and aldehydes have a sort of cleaner-than-clean brightness to them. When you start to smell the jasmine and the orange blossom, it feels genuinely seductive because they’re a kind of dirty smear across the aldehydes’ sterility. Love it.
Neither here nor there, but I sprayed Rendezvous on a little swatch before actually trying it on, and one of my dogs was super into it. He was like… SNIFF… SNEEZE… SNIFF… Reminded me of how cats supposedly go nuts for Calvin Klein’s “Obsession for Men.”
