“Pine Tree” in Japanese, Matsu, is the scent of lush forest air, cool, green and refreshing. It has that kind of simplified Japanese aesthetic that feels like not too much but just enough. After years of wearing DSH scents and sampling many, many more, I find Matsu to be an answer to my search for something I can wear daily, anywhere, in any season.
As a teenager, I used Dior’s Eau Sauvage and this extraordinary new fragrance has some of the same appeal. But it’s BETTER ! More subtle, kinder, yet just as fresh. In the direction of Dior’s Eau Fraiche but less cloying.
Also, at present, I am experiencing some nausea because of a physical condition, and Matsu actually helps with this.

After sampling about a dozen DSH perfumes, I fell in love with Matsu. Wearing it puts me in a good mood. I recommend sampling a few fragrances before buying a full-sized bottle. I can’t wait to get the full-sized bottle I just ordered!
If you’re a woman, like me, looking for a fresh scent, don’t worry about the “for men” tag. I always think “unisex” when I see that.

One of the things that stands up in most of DSH Perfumes is that how well-developed they are conceptually. You might say that some could be better in terms of complexity or performance, but Dawn usually delivers what she promises, her designs are precise and elegant. And it’s such the case here in Matsu, one of her creations that goes into the minimalist room of the DSH Mansion of Creations.
Matsu is “Pine Tree” in Japanese and Dawn is adhering here to an aesthetic japanese design. She proposes the smell of lush forest air, something fresh lively, never overpowing or complicated. Somethin like a Haiku format of perfume, compact, elegant and to the point. And it’s exactly what she delivers here in this musky-woody composition.
What i miss the most is exactly the luscious complexity that Dawn delivers so perfectly with her many years of practice, but in Matsu Dawn again shows how versatile she is. The perfume delivers you a scent of bitter citrus leaves which are drenched in creamy airy musks and in a serene woody base that seens to stand mostly in sandalwood and rosewood. Matsu seems to bypass the piramidal structure to favor a biphasic development. And as she states in the description, the scent is never overpowing or complicated, but it never leaves you either. You are not smelling the Pine Tree itself, but a whiff of it in the forest carried by the wind. It’s serene and easy to like, one that i would recommend for someone that is not into the complicated vintage aesthetic.

Tried as edp. Unfortunately this instantly vanishes on my skin–I had to reapply to check I hadn’t skimped. I’ve never had a fragrance vanish so thoroughly so quickly! I’m going to have to get a friend to try it to see if it’s just my skin chemistry.
There’s the faintest hint of something warm and woodsy-green but I can’t get anything more than that.

We’re so sorry that this scent didn’t work well on your skin. Interestingly, this is one of our best sellers in Japan…where they do tend to favor lighter, less obtrusive scent design.

The first fragrance I got from Dawn, and it is perfect. Sweet, woody, citrusy, it smells amazing, and it pairs well when layering with other DSH fragrances that I have since bought.
