Description
Inspired by the deliciously moody liquor made from the stems & skins left over from winemaking, known as Grappa. As I associate imbibing this potent potion most often in Venice, Grappa e Bergamotto has been infused with a sense of the wet stones and cool, earthy rain of this ancient island city. In the end, there’s a wonderful balance of cool and warm, sweet and boozy / dry, fresh and earthy that is expressed in Grappa e Bergamotto; a new way of looking at a modern, sheer green chypre.

Opens with the tart scent of fresh, green grapes and a hint of bright citrus. As it dries, a smooth sweetness emerges, blending with creamy jasmine. A soft blend of white florals joins the jasmine, blossoming over a damp bed of moss with subtle notes of rose and gentle sandalwood.
This sounded quite bright and fresh, which isn’t my style, but it’s actually a very smooth, soft blend of the green and citrus nuts. I like this a lot, it reminds me of Avocado Toast but more light and airy. This is not at all the scent I was expecting when I saw fougere and chypre in the description, they generally feel much too masculine for me, but this scent is quite modern and elegant and could be wrong by anyone regardless of gender. A lovely scent for spring and summer, refreshing but very soft and calming.

I am surprised by the absence of reviews for this, as it is a complete winner! It’s a Mediterranean seafront meadow in the heat of summer. All of the fruity softness of Bergamot but with an unsweetened white grape note, an accord that reminds me of standing under an olive tree (!!!), and warm musky woods combine to create a unisex eau de cologne style fragrance. This easily could have been an Hermes jardin scent! Sunshine and smiles in a bottle.

This is just delightful to me. Tart-sour with an almost imperceptible curling edge of sweetness, mineralic but shy of salty. There is a minor astringency that I would associate with grape must attaching to the side of its brewing vessel, and also with the sensory experience of chewing on separated green grape skins (*without* the sweet fruity grape-flesh).
Something about the silhouette of this fragrance made me want to combine it with lilac (pacifica’s ‘french lilac’ is all I had at hand; a sweet bouquet). I’m not a full synesthete, but this combination brings distinctly to my mind the image of a lilac inflorescence crusted with sparkling SOUR-sweet rock sugar. The shapes seemed to fit just right to each other.
I love to enjoy the unexpected Grappa et Bergamotto on its own, and also look forward to exploring more combinations as a warming winter turns to spring, spring turns to summer.
