When I first ordered a sample of Inner Sanctum, I was expecting it to be a heavier chypre scent, and wasn’t sure that it would be to my taste. I was so surprised, then, when I received my sample and discovered a dark, complex rose scent with gentle undertones of oud and incense. For whatever reason, I don’t get much amber or oakmoss on me. If Dawn’s American Beauty is a young, fresh, red rose, then Inner Sanctum is her older, more complicated, Goth sister. I particularly enjoy this one in the Fall, when the nights are cooler, and the year’s last roses are in final flower. I do have to reapply after a few hours, but admit that I’ve not tried the EDP with fixative, which may very well prolong its lasting power.

Most rose orientals tend to be dark and foreboding, but Inner Sanctum manages to be light and deliciously warm. It is worn close to the skin and I imagine it would be most wonderful in its body lotion/creme incarnations.

A burst of Oudh and Amber announce the scent with the Rose (which smells to me like attar of Turkish Rose), slowly emerging as the soft center.

Lke Coty’s Masumi, Brousseau’s Coriander and Lalique’s Perles, this is a truly wonderful mature rose scent with far more delicacy and balance than in any of the three above-mentioned scents.

    Full marks!
